program notes

Fanfare for Trombones may be played at any transposition level by any even number of trombones (2 or more) equally divided at the left and right sides of the performance space.

Originally written for trumpets in 2004 at the request of John Holt for inclusion on a recording of pieces dedicated to John Haynie (Crystal Records CD 763), Fanfare for Trombones was arranged by Mark Scott and premièred by him and Jeremy Wilson at the University of North Texas on April 20, 2007.

In this work, two sharply articulated trombone parts compete to occupy the same registral space while pushing and pulling against one another to resolve their harmonic differences.

press/reviews

Cindy McTee's Fanfare for Trumpets, though very brief, holds one's attention as two trumpets seem to have a sort of musical argument.

. . . trumpet mavens should relish Cindy McTee's urgent Fanfare, in which the two instruments imitate and compete with one another . . .

Donald Rosenberg

This listener was also drawn to Cindy McTee's Fanfare for Trumpets and Martin Mailman's Concertino for Trumpet as outstanding examples of writing for the trumpet.
